MFA, Janelidze Celebrate the Potential of Georgian Diaspora

Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze held the official ceremony of presenting the Diaspora Awards, where 13 representatives of the Diaspora were honored who are making their mark in their host countries for their talent and intellect in art, science, sports, culture and other fields. Our Diaspora has enormous potential that could be used for the benefit of our country. Effective use of the intellectual abilities of Georgian emigrants is an important underlying factor for the development of our country and the government should do everything possible to make the most of this potential.”

The Diaspora Awards were presented to 13 candidates selected by the inter-agency commission in six nominations: painter Lika Shkhvatsabaia (Spain), singer Keti Melua (Great Britain) and folk dancer Maka Lomadze for promoting Georgian culture abroad; Historian Davit Kolbaia (Poland), physician-scientist Sopo Adamia (USA), scientist Merab Kokaia (Sweden) and surgeon Ioseb Nanobashvili (Austria) for their contribution to science; PhD student Mikheil Sarjveladze (Germany) for public diplomacy; Georgian national basketball team captain and NBI Championship winner Zaza Pachulia for his contribution to sport; Austrian businessman Leonid Bausbeck, Greek journalist Teodora Avgeri and Swiss musician Thomas Hisermann for their devoted friendship with Georgia.

The awards were presented by Minister of Culture and Monument Protection Mikheil Giorgadze; Minister of Labour, Health and Social Affairs David Sergeenko; Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Tariel Khechikashvili; Georgian State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Victor Dolidze; and the Chairman of the Committee on Diaspora and Caucasus Affairs Zviad Kvachantiradze. The event was attended by members of the executive and legislative branches of the government and special guests. Head of the European Union Delegation to Georgia Janos Herman and Director of ICMPD Violeta Wagner spoke at the event.
